Assassin’s Creed Mirage was one of the most important in 2023. Ubisoft Forward titles, as the company shared a new trailer detailing the stakes of the story, as well as a pre-recorded gameplay demo that went through a mission and highlighted some back-to-basics elements. New story trailer for Mirage expands on what the company has already shared, that the game will be a “tragic” coming-of-age story for Basim, who was previously a supporting character. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
The trailer portrays Basim as a young street thief who is rescued from the city guards by master assassin Roshan (played by Shohreh Aghdashloo from Destiny and Width glory). We see him as a young killer, but we also see him dealing with inner turmoil as the trailer teases themes of sacrifice, destiny and inner demons.
Game demo
The demo takes place at the beginning of the game. We meet Basim as he hovers on the rooftops above the street, and he soon kills a guard fleeing the scene through the streets, flipping objects to block the path behind him. Eventually, he climbs onto rooftops, parks himself across beams and ledges, and swings between buildings with cinematic flair.
Ubisoft describes parkour as “accessible, easy to control” and hopes players will feel “enticed to use it” and “feel in control”. Shifting the focus to parkour is a big deal for a series that has devoted the last few games to wide open spaces.
Basim returns to base and receives a series of new missions, safe locations for new assassin offices, which gives insight into medium-term goals. Basim also gets a new tool; a blower that can put guards to sleep. Ubisoft says there will be a total of five tools, including smoke bombs, throwing knives, silencers, and darts.
Basim then goes to the bulletin board and chooses one of the many contractor jobs that dictate specific targets to kill for a reward. We then see him sitting and hanging out as the day quickly turns to night.
As he begins his mission and approaches the target area, a fortified building, Basim calls his hawk to survey the area from above. Unfortunately, a sentry marksman tries to shoot him down, forcing Basim to rethink his approach.
Basim gets down to street level and climbs the side of the building to penetrate the outer wall. He dives into a large pile of leaves and then quickly pops out and tries to blend in with a small group of women who are a little confused but willing to cooperate after a few words from Basim.
After a guard walks past them unknowingly, Basim sneaks into the nearby bushes, missing several guards. He uses a blowtorch to put one to sleep, and when the others come to examine the body, he kills them.
From there, Basim uses a noisemaker to make the guard turn around before going on the killing spree. He is briefly caught by another guard, but throws a knife to silence him before he can get a word out. He then climbs the tower, dispatches the gunner who threatened his hawk, and once again calls the bird to view the compound from above, quickly spotting his target.
As he makes his way to the target across the roof, several hawk-marked guards can be seen. Basim then demonstrates one of his new abilities, the Ethereal Chain Assassination, in which he dispatches three separate guards incredibly quickly one after another from quite a distance, teleporting between each one.
Basim clearly sees the target, but takes the time to prepare an escape route by throwing a gas mine at the main door.
He jumps and kills his mark from above and engages nearby guards in a sword fight. Ubisoft made a bit of a point that the developers have captured some new sword fight animations, especially Miragein an effort to create a faster combat feel.
When Basim has had enough, he bursts through the entrance and the gas mine sends out a guard who tries to block his way. As he runs past them, Basim drops some colored smoke at the blind guards, and eventually merges into the crowd to end the demo.
From this gameplay demo, it really looks like Ubisoft is trying to capture the same gameplay loops of the original first. Assassin’s Creed games from the 2000s instead of trying to get too ambitious or complicated with stealth mechanics. The key to this circuit is the fantasy of finding a target, planning a puzzle-like solution to how to get there, and then hustling to keep them in sight (no matter how inconvenient).
Ubisoft seems to be looking for nostalgia for a simpler time Assassin’s Creed history with Miragecompensate for what is more modern Assassin’s Creed fans may perceive as a lack of diversity. It also has a lot of focus on its storytelling, so hopefully the shorter runtime will benefit and its beats will be more compelling and faster.
Ubisoft didn’t provide any hands-on demos to the public or press during the Ubisoft Forward festivities, so we’ll have to wait and see how the game shapes up when it’s released in 2023 October 12 PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S.
